The 2024 Groovies - A Celebration of Video Game Music
Our mission is simple–celebrate the diversity, passion, and creativity of the VGM community. We do this through articles, interviews, and even cover albums, and in 2022, we decided to create a new way to celebrate the accomplishments of the VGM community–the Groovies. The Groovies is not a competition; it is a recognition of the people that we feel are shaping VGM for the better. Each one of these artists adds something unique and irreplaceable to the video game music community, and for that reason, they deserve our support.

SOLO ARRANGEMENT
“Shana's Theme, but an 80's Ballad” by Bar X
I had the enormous pleasure of watching this cover performed live at MAGFest 2024, and despite having no prior knowledge of The Legend of Dragoon or Bar X, I instantly fell in love with this arrangement. It’s a testament to Bar X’s ability that he can transform a minute-and-a-half song into this 5-minute 80’s ballad. With a stunning performance, excellent video editing, and a bevy of synthesizers, this is one VGM artist who is raising the bar (sorry, I had to).
GROUP ARRANGEMENT
“In the Blood” by Premium Vintage featuring Katy Scary, Lacey Johnson
Like many of you, I was surprised when I heard that Carrie Wood was involved in yet another VGM band, but I was even more surprised when I listened to The Symphony of Hades by Premium Vintage. Being familiar with Mahn, I knew that the album would feature lots of tasty riffs, and it certainly does, but the closing track is what really caught my attention. The dual vocals of Lacey Johnson and Katy Scary are a powerful and intoxicating brew, and the rest of the performers shine as well, with acoustic interludes by Mahn and a strong rhythm section courtesy of Carrie and drummer, Angel Hernandez. I can only imagine how this song would sound live, and with any luck, I won’t have to wait too long.
SOLO COVER ALBUM
“Heart Seeker” by Allison Martin
Allison Martin’s previous VGM cover album, See the World, showcased her ability as a trombonist, but Heart Seeker showcases her ability as an arranger. From the opening track “Don’t Think Twice,” it’s clear that this album is going to be a new and, dare I say, unexpected experience. Heart Seeker reveals a more confident artist with impressive vocal performances, complex arrangements, and forays into all subgenres of jazz. Plenty of great video game cover albums released last year, but Allison poured both her heart and soul into this album, earning her a spot on this list.
GROUP COVER ALBUM
“Fair Winds & Following Seas feat. ATLYS” by ZREO: Second Quest
Zelda Reorchestrated (or ZREO as they were more commonly known) was the first VGM community I ever joined, so I was devastated when they ended in 2013. Fortunately, ZREO returned as ZREO: Second Quest in 2017, and they’ve been releasing high-quality Zelda covers for the last several years. Together with string quartet ATLYS, ZREO: Second Quest have released the definitive Wind Waker tribute album, and I’m truly in awe of both the production and performances on the album. If you don’t already own this album, please make sure to support this incredible group!
ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK
“Tchia” by John Robert Matz
In a year chock-full of incredible games and game music, one soundtrack stood above the rest–Tchia by John Robert Matz. Music plays such an integral part of the story and gameplay, and John went to great lengths to ensure that the New Caledonian culture was represented authentically. Games like Tchia and Venba showcase non-Western cultures through music, story, and gameplay, and the best part is that you don’t need to travel thousands of miles to experience them! (Although, I would not turn down a trip to beautiful New Caledonia if someone offered.)
ORIGINAL COMPOSER
Borislav Slavov
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a crowning achievement for both Larian Studios and the video game industry as a whole. Meticulous detail has been paid to every facet of the game, and that includes the music. While Tchia might have a more unique soundtrack, you can’t deny that Borislav Slavov has created plenty of memorable tracks as well. “Down by the River” will be a staple of VGM artists for years to come, and the rest of the soundtrack elevates the player’s experience by creating an immersive atmosphere. At several points during my 100-hour playthrough (I’m still not finished, so no spoilers), I’ve stopped the game to simply appreciate Borislav’s incredible work. To me, there’s no higher praise for an OST.
VIDEO PERFORMANCE
“A Game Taught Me South Indian Cooking.. Venba” by Ro Panuganti
Ro Panuganti has been championing Venba for quite a while, and now that it’s out, I’m happy to say that the game has lived up to the hype. Venba’s heart-warming story mixes delicious gameplay with exquisite music for a one-a-of-kind experience. Moreover, this video is an inspired love letter to video game music, Indian culture, and cooking, and I can’t think of a more fitting tribute to one of the most important video games of the year. NERDCORE PERFORMANCE
“No Exit” by LongestSoloEver
LongestSoloEver has been active since 2006, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that he became infamous for his Friday Night Funkin’ covers and originals. Most recently, he’s been creating original songs based on existing fanbases, and “No Exit” is a tribute to The Amazing Digital Circus. To be honest, I don’t know what’s more impressive–the vocal delivery on this track or the fact that Dean wrote, directed, and animated this music video. Much like Kurapika, LongestSoloEver is one of those rare people who possess many abilities, and if you want to learn more about him, be sure to check out his new podcast with Ro Panuganti!

Ro Panuganti
I’ve been friends with Ro Panuganti for the last 9 years, and it’s been my privilege to watch him grow as an artist, a performer, a producer, and a community leader. He has been instrumental to GameGrooves, what’s more, he’s always looking to give back to the VGM community, whether that’s sharing video guides or helping people with licensing questions. In 2023, he released SitarCraft, a celebration of his heritage and his love for video game music, and just a few weeks ago, he took to the main stage at MAGFest to share his music with the world. The VGM community is lucky to have artists like Ro, and I am lucky to call him a friend.

Some things just belong together–peanut butter and jelly, macaroni and cheese, Ian Cowell and Carrie Wood. In less than a year, this dynamic duo has released two cover albums with another on the way, and their irreverent, playful style is a welcome addition to the VGM community. Their eclectic taste is well-represented on their debut album, The Hot Light, and if you want to know more about their inspirations (as well as how the album got its title), tune into Carrie’s episode on the GameGrooves Uncovered podcast. Watch out world, this Bi Score is setting a new high score!
For their contributions to the VGM community, each Groovie recipient will receive a custom, 3D-printed trophy.
