April Fools' VGM Roundup

April Fools’ is a time-honored tradition where VGM artists compete to create the most fun, memorable, and annoying cover possible. This year, everyone stepped up their game, making it hard for me to narrow down my favorites into one list. If you don’t see your favorite April Fools’ cover listed here, be sure to share in the comments below!

“Undertale - Wrong Number Song” by RichGC

First up, we have RichGC doing what RichGC does best—mega collaborations. While the premise is rather simple, it’s the execution that matters, and it’s a fun treat to see so many folks from the VGM community make a cameo (including yours truly).

“Zelda: Link's Awakening - Frog's Song of the Soul" by The Game Brass

One of the more obscure tracks from the Zelda series, this cover pays tribute to amphibians both large and small with top-notch video editing and a smart arrangement for a brass trio. What’s more, John Robert Matz’s vocals lend a certain pathos to the whole affair.

“Ducktales - The Moon” by Lame Genie

I think that Lame Genie broke my brain with this cover.

“YouTube Premiere” by Ro Panuganti

Ro Panuganti channeled his inner Xzibit to bring us the most important (and necessary) cover of them all—the YouTube Premiere cover. I don’t have any uncles at YouTube, but if any of you do, please tell them to use this for all YouTube Premieres from now on.

“Pong - Pong” by Squishy Pixelz

Another simple premise with flawless execution. This might be the most accurate cover of the whole list.

“Resident Evil - Mansion Basement” by mklachu

One of the most infamous tracks in VGM (for all the wrong reasons), “Mansion Basement” is the perfect candidate for any April Fools’ tomfoolery. Mklachu raises the bar by adding ASMR and authentic footage of her own basement.

“Wii Sports Theme” by Gunderslam

This cover belongs on this list for so many reasons, but mostly because I’m impressed that no one was hurt during the recording of this video (there was a close call at 1:33, though). Who says that metalheads don’t like the outdoors?

“Zelda - Serenade of Water” by Medllix

The more that I listen to this cover, the more uncomfortable it makes me.

“Segata Sanshiro Animated Cover” by HugoJ

I had no idea who Segata Sanshiro was before this animated cover, but now I want him in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

“Grindcorevania” by Chernabogue (NSFW audio)

Chernabogue arguably wins this entire list because he produced an entire grindcore VGM album in less than 12 hours AND because he included a nod to the world’s shortest track! I can only imagine what he’ll concoct for April Fools’ next year!
