Lacey Johnson Steals the Show in this Rocket League Medley
Lacey Johnson has been on fire lately, collaborating with some of the finest names in VGM. This time, she’s put her vocal skills to the test with a Rocket League medley (arranged by Ubaldo B) that is one of the best covers I’ve heard in a long time. This VGM dream team features Ubaldo B and RichaadEB on guitar, FamilyJules on bass, and Lacey on vocals, and although everyone on this track deserves credit, Lacey’s charisma is practically infectious. I asked arranger, producer, and guitarist Ubaldo B to share the creative process for this cover, and here’s what he had to say:
This medley had actually been in the works for a very long time (almost 2 years I believe). There was a seemingly endless amount of challenges with production, recording parts, and having schedules work with everyone involved, considering I had never organized a collaboration this large and intricate before. There were a few times when I took multiple month-long breaks from it for various reasons, thinking it would never get done. The motivation that kept it alive was that this was going to be my grandest and proudest work to date, which it absolutely was.
I love the music in Rocket League (especially those by Hollywood Principle, which make up the bulk of this medley), and loved the challenge of taking these electronic styles and making them my own. With this cast of collaborators I'm pleased to call friends (Lacey Johnson, FamilyJules, and RichaadEB) and the incredible mastering of my lifelong friend Matt Steelman, this medley is something I will always look back at with pride. I consider this my masterpiece at this point.
Masterpiece, indeed. Kudos to Ubaldo B and the rest of the collaborators for one of the finest VGM covers I’ve ever heard.
