Mass Effect - Piano Legacy Review

BUY Mass Effect - Piano Legacy

Editor’s Note: A review copy of the album was provided to GameGrooves.

I’m GameGrooves, and this is my favorite album on the Citadel. In all seriousness, Mass Effect - Piano Legacy is a short but sweet tribute to one of the greatest RPG series of all time. These stripped-down piano arrangements will be sure to capture your imagination and your heart.

Starting with “Vigil,” Torby Brand invites the listener to an interstellar journey across Mass Effect 1, 2, and 3. Perhaps the most iconic track on this album (and my favorite), “Uncharted Worlds” reveals the true genius of this album. By taking these orchestral tracks and paring them down to a single instrument (in this case, a piano), Torby enhances the mystery and emotion found in the original tracks. The galaxy is a big place, as you are constantly reminded when you explore the cosmos aboard the Normandy, and this EP perfectly captures that sense of isolation and intrigue. My other favorite on the album, “Suicide Mission” showcases a dynamic, bold performance, acting as a perfect climax for the album.

Torby Brand is no stranger to video game cover albums, having produced Minecraft: The Piano Collection and Skyrim: Piano Tales, but Mass Effect - Piano Legacy surpasses both for several reasons. The most immediate improvement is the audio production. Torby has found a piano tone that strikes a perfect balance between dreamy and grounded, and his arrangements will often take a moment to allow the listener to enjoy the chords and melodies on display. Speaking of arrangements, Torby has an incredible ability to create dense soundscapes that never feel too crowded or too meandering. On the other hand, quieter moments like the ones found in “I Was Lost Without You” and “I’m Proud of You” feel just as powerful as the louder, more bombastic moments. My only complaint is that I wish the album was longer, but at the same time, I appreciate how concise the album is. Perhaps, the best solution isn’t a longer album, but more albums in this same vein.

Whether you’re a Mass Effect fan or not, this album of piano arrangements by Torby Brand is perfect for studying, driving, or stargazing.
