Winter Quick Fire Cover Challenge Results

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! To celebrate the holiday season, GameGrooves invited everyone to make a video game cover of their favorite snow/winter/ice level. We had 5 entries this time, and while they were all strong contenders, one cover stood out in particular.

“A Wish ▸ Winter LoFi Jazz Remix” by Spaceroast

This chilled-out cover combines icy pads with a beautiful piano lead. It’s no secret that Spaceroast knows how to make charming arrangements, but this one is perfect for snowy days, hot chocolate, and snuggling up by the fire. My only wish is for Spaceroast to make more covers like this one.

“In a Snow-Bound Land” by Fuzz Pixels

With this cover, we’re treated to a different side of Fuzz Pixels. Primarily known for his upbeat, punk rock covers, “In a Snowbound Land” sees Jason slow things down with reverb-soaked guitars and a killer rhythm section. This isn’t just a cover; it’s an anthem of epic proportions.

“In a Snow-Bound Land” by Jonas Bombeke

This cover showcases Jonas’s folk sensibilities by featuring a banjo, a mandolin, and an accordion that perfectly complement each other. Speaking of complementing each other, Jonas and Fuzz Pixels demonstrate the versatility of video game music by creating two very different covers of the same song.

“Snowy Fields” by ZeldaRocks

If I had to describe this cover in a word it would be “cozy.” ZeldaRocks creates an interesting dynamic through his use of percussion and the bright, cheerful guitar and mallet sounds that make this a memorable cover. The vocals at the end of arrangement are the cherry on top of this ice cream sundae.

…and now for the winner of the Winter Quick Fire Cover Challenge…

“Winter VGM Medley” by ACappellaVGM

Patrick went above and beyond for this challenge by creating a medley of 4 winter VGM tracks, including an intro and outro. He is a master of his craft with perfectly balanced vocals, seamless transitions, and crystal clear production. He even recruited the help of his wife for a few parts, which just goes to show that VGM is for the whole family!

Final Thoughts

Thanks to all of the Winter QFCC entrants and thanks to everyone who participated in a Quick Fire Cover Challenge in 2021! This year, there will be some significant changes to the format, but rest assured, QFCC will return!
