Who Won the January Quick Fire Cover Challenge?

For the first Quick Fire Cover Challenge of 2021, I asked artists to cover any game that prominently features LGBTQ+ characters, composers, or themes. While we only received four entries, they all showcased passionate artists with extraordinary talent, and as promised, the winner was chosen at random, so I’ll not reveal who won ;)

Editor’s Note: I’m sharing these covers in the order that I received them, not in any ranked order.

“Reflection & Little Goth” (from Celeste) by Stycky Keys

It comes as no surprise that the first entry was from the excellent indie title Celeste. Aside from tackling themes of anxiety and depression, the game features a trans main character as revealed by the game’s creator. What’s more, the OST continues to be one of my all-time favorites, and this somber piano cover perfectly conveys the emotional state of Madeline.

"Farewell" & "Resurrections" Cover (from Celeste) by Dave Clumsy

One Celeste cover is good, but two is great! This short, but sweet cover from Celeste builds really well with lush synth strings, a solid bassline, and an ending that is—dare I say—epic.

“Authenticity - Pertisia's Piano Solo” (from Ikenfell) by
Israfelcello

When Ikenfell released late last year, it was heralded for its inclusive and diverse set of characters, its beautiful soundtrack, and its charming, retro art style. I can’t think of a more fitting title for this month’s theme, and Israfelcello brings this piece to life masterfully. I hope this is the first of many Ikenfell covers from this incredible artist!

"Max & Chloe" Cover (from Life is Strange) by
Coin-Op Co.

While I’ve never played Life Is Strange, I have heard that the story is incredible, and judging from this cover, I would say it must be a heart-warming experience. I love the indie rock vibes, the soft vocals, and the overall ambience, and given that this appears to be the first cover for Coin-Op Co., I’m excited to hear what else they have in store for us!
