GameGrooves Costume Contest Results
Now that Halloween is over, it’s time to announce the GameGrooves Costume Contest winner! We had 6 entries total, and each one presented both a stunning arrangement and a creative costume design. While there can only be one winner, I’ve decided to share all 6 entries so that you can judge for yourself which one is your favorite!
Honorable Mentions
Gaunter O'Dimm's Theme - Psamathes
This entry by Psamathes is not for the faint of heart. She took an already creepy song and made it somehow even creepier, not to mention the haunting outfit that she custom-created for this arrangement. Watch this video with the lights on!
Prayer of The Oracle - Final Fantasy Piano Music
While I’m not too familiar with the Final Fantasy XV soundtrack or characters, I could tell this entry was something special the moment I heard it. The Ardyn cosplay was spot-on and so was this beautiful piano arrangement. Then again, with a name like “Final Fantasy Piano Music,” I would expect nothing less.
Luigi's Mansion Theme - Allison Martin Trombone
By far, the most colorful entry of all 6, Allison Martin’s cover features impressive props, video editing, and of course, acting. Her arrangement is equally fun and playful, making this a strong contender. I look forward to more covers like this one that feature creative arrangements, playful editing, and top-notch special effects.
Tavern - Warp Whistles Music
Animals in costumes are the best; it’s a scientific fact. This whimsical cover may have featured a feline star, but don’t be fooled—the arrangement shines just as bright as any of the leading actors. I can only hope that Ceci and Taters will make a sequel video very soon.
REACH OUT FOR THE TRUTH - Jack Harvey
Jack Harvey might be a newcomer, but it’s easy to see (and hear) why he’s the perfect fit for a Persona 4 cover. His slick outfit is complemented by a slick guitar arrangement, and the blistering guitar solo really seals the deal. Keep your eye on Jack Harvey, folks; this is one VGM artist who is going places.
Grand Prize Winner
The World Revolving - The Game Brass
While any one of these entries could have won, the Game Brass really went all-out for this Jevil costume. Just read this description of how the costume was created by Robby Duguay:
The jester suit is from a British store called Smiffy's that took several days to arrive to where Robby lives in Canada, and then he color-corrected the suit to match Jevil's arena.
The mask was the particularly challenging part which required a lot of work and experimentation. First, he tried to use a bowl for papier mâché, but that wasn't working. He instead got a basic plastic mask from a dollar store and added papier mâché and drywall putty to fill out the shape. Then the mask was spray-painted with gray primer that happened to be close to Jevil's actual skin tone.
The eyes of the mask were drawn with a sharpie to get sharp edges, and then paint was used to fill in. The teeth and eyes are post-it notes that Robby cut shapes out of. Robby wore a black turtleneck to hide as much skin as possible so that only the suit and the mask would show up in the video. Robby also edited the video and took a lot of inspiration from Jevil's attacks as well as from the hyper-looking idle information where multiple Jevils are on-screen.
If that’s not dedication, I don’t know what is. Now, the only question is how do you split $200 among 10 people?
Final Thoughts
Thanks again to everyone who entered and stay tuned for the last GameGrooves Quick Fire Cover Challenge of the year in December!
